This article examines the history of performance practice within the Vienna School, focusing in particular on Arnold Schoenberg’s ideals of performance and how these evolved during the 20th century. Drawing on key publications such as "Die Lehre von der musikalischen Aufführung in der Wiener Schule" (2002), the author explores the ‘Viennese Espressivo’, tempo interpretation and the role of key performers such as Rudolf Kolisch and Eduard Steuermann. The article contrasts ‘Espressivo’ practice with ‘New Objectivity’ and examines recordings by Schoenberg (Verklärte Nacht) and Webern. The author advocates a contextual history of interpretation that incorporates audio recordings and compositional clarifications, and outlines areas for further research regarding reception after 1945.
