Abstract

This article examines the complex history of the creation and performance of Arnold Schoenberg’s opera *Moses und Aron*. It focuses on the concert premiere on 12 March 1954 in Hamburg, conducted by Hans Rosbaud, after the originally scheduled conductor, Hans Schmidt-Isserstedt, withdrew at short notice. The article traces the protracted negotiations between Schönberg, his pupil Hermann Scherchen and later his widow Gertrud Schönberg with publishers and broadcasting organisations. Particular attention is paid to the production of the performance materials, the political and personal obstacles, and the significance of this premiere for the reception of the work. The article is based on extensive source material, including correspondence and archival documents.
