This article examines Arnold Schönberg's influence on modern composition pedagogy. It focuses on (1) his dialogical teacher-student relationship, (2) the central role of artistic practice in the classroom and (3) the importance of autodidactic learning. Particular attention is drawn to Schönberg's innovative teaching concepts such as the idea of “composition workshops”, which continue to have an impact today in formats such as the composing workshop at the Arnold Schönberg Center. His approaches combine artistic and pedagogical processes and offer solutions to current issues in the teaching of composition.
